‘Plastic’ Photo Series

2020

As a material, Plastic has a rich and interesting history - with its reputation changing dramatically throughout the years, which has therefore affected its meaning. For each of images, I deconstruct moments in plastic’s history and examine its presence, reputation, interpretations, and promises for the future.

“Pollution,” showcases our modern, negative interpretation of plastic as being dangerous; cheap; and harmful to ourselves, our environment, and the planet.

“The Material of a Thousand Uses,” will highlight the initial positive and hopeful outlooks towards plastic and showcase its exciting and futuristic potential to build a shiny utopia.

“Superficial,” will explore the changing feelings towards plastic in the 1960s as people became suspicious of its environmental risk and its cheap, consumerist conformity reputation. Furthermore, it will explore the newer interpretation of plastic being associated with fakeness and superficiality and how that affects our culture.
